Advanced Directives:  A Healthcare Instrument of Choice

January 12, 2016 -  21 minutes and 07 seconds
Guest:  Bob Kelter, Paramedic, Baraboo District Ambulance and social worker specialist

Living wills, healthcare powers of attorney and DNR/DNI.  These are all legal advanced directives we in EMS should be aware of.  What are they?  How do they work?  What if I come into an event and a family member states they have one, but there isn’t paperwork or an identification bracelet on the patient.  Now what do I do?  Can someone critically injured or taking their last breaths of air share with me as a healthcare provider and a witness present a verbal advanced directive?

Well, we answer these and a few other questions with someone who knows – Bob Kelter.  He’s a paramedic with Baraboo District Ambulance and also pull some shifts at Sauk Prairie Ambulance.  Bob’s previous employment was in social work, specializing in police social work to be exact.  Previous to entering an EMS career, he was chief of social work delivery for a number of years at the VA Hospital in Madison.
