Twenty EMS Professionals Received 2010 Stars of Life Honors

Nominated by their respective ambulance service directors, twenty EMS professionals were presented on September 22, 2010 award citations signed by Governor Jim Doyle, and gold medalions from the Professional Ambulance Association of Wisconsin (PAAW) and American Ambulance Association (AAA) organizations.

The Stars program and dinner banquet was held at the Tundra Lodge and Conference Center in Green Bay as part of the Paramedic Systems of Wisconsin Conference.  The evening's program was capped off with a keynote speech by American Ambulance Association President Jim Finger, "Stars Make A Difference Every Day".  Wisconsin is one of eight states sponsoring an annual Stars event, which is modeled after the American Ambulance Association's (AAA) national Stars program.

In addition, Stars recipients attended a daylong outing in Madison at the State Capitol on October 18, 2011 for "Stars Day at the Capitol", where a resolution was read and voted in their presence, in both the Senate and Assembly, on commending the Stars for their achievement and honors. A standing ovation was offered by elected leaders in both house chambers.  Stars also met with their local Senators and Representatives for individual meetings and photos.  To see our photo page dedicated to the capitol event, click the respective under score for our facebook photo page or PAAW website photo page.

According to PAAW President Patrick Ryan, "Stars stood up for EMS today at the State Capitol. It was nice to see their contributions and this award noted, honored and recognized."

What it means to be a Star...

"It was such a tremendous privilege to be able to partake in the STARS ceremony.  I felt so honored to receive this wonderful award. I was overwhelmed by everything PAAW and the AAA presented to make it such a wonderful evening. This was one of the greatest honors I’ve ever had.

I do believe there is no other profession deserving of the respect and admiration than those of the EMS profession. These individuals give selflessly time after time and merit the honor attached to this prestigious award."

Teri Nitka, Director of Ambulance Operations, Paratech Ambulance Service, Milwaukee

“I was extremely honored to be recognized as a 2010 ‘Star of Life’.  It was an honor that I never expected to receive but, I am very proud to say that I was recognized in such a manner.  EMTs are usually very ordinary people but are extraordinary in some ways.  One of the ways we seem ‘special’ is that we don’t look for a spotlight for what we do.  Just knowing we’ve made a difference in a patient’s life during a stressful time is ‘thanks’ enough.  At least it always has been for me.  I want to thank PAAW and AAA for this much appreciated honor.”

Steve Krantz, EMT-P, Gold Cross Ambulance Service - Fox Valley
